AMPTO members driving tourism towards a better future, through research, tourism development, training and environmental sustainability
Who are we, what do we do?
AMPTO Limited is a not for profit limited company registered with ASIC. It is the peak body for marine tourism in Queensland and has members throughout the State.
AMPTO is a founder member of the Cooperative Research Centre for the Reef providing support for scientific research on the reef, and developing best, sustainable, practices for industry members. Our association was also instrumental in the formation of the GBR Research Foundation – a private non - profit organisation which directs benefactors’ funds toward reef research.
AMPTO was instrumental in obtaining federal and state government funding to assist operators in combat the current Crown of Thorns Starfish plague. The vast majority of visitation by tourists, and the public, to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Listed Area is facilitated by marine tourism operators.
$Aus 2 billion dollars per annum is generated for the Queensland State regional economy by marine park tourism. The Environmental Management Charge paid by operators provides $A 6 million dollars annually toward management of the GBR and related scientific research. We began in 1985 with daily snorkelling tours. We've been expanding our offerings ever since and have grown to one of the largest and best-known scuba dive companies in Australia.
We go to a great number of dive sites and offer various year-round day tour and liveaboard packages for every level of diver. We offer special group packages for large families, corporate events, and parties.
